Chapter 15: Two Clips, One Soul**

That evening, as twilight cast golden and rose-colored hues across the waters of the bay, Elena sat in front of her vanity mirror.
Beside her, on a velvet tray, lay the two antique crystal barrettes.
Elena picked them up. For decades, they had been separated—one locked away in a gilded cage of isolation, the other carried through smoke, rain, and poverty. But now, they lay side by side, catching the fading light and reflecting it in brilliant, unbreakable prisms.
Leo walked into the bedroom, freshly bathed in his pajamas, holding a bedtime storybook under his arm.
"Auntie Ellie? Will you read to me?"
"Of course," Elena smiled warmly.
She turned to the mirror. Instead of pinning just one into her hair as she had done for years, Elena pinned both clips side by side above her ear—a double crown of crystal that sparkled like stars in the evening gloom.
Leo watched her in the mirror, his hazel eyes wide with recognition and joy. "You're wearing both of them."
Elena turned around, opened her arms, and pulled the boy onto her lap.

"One is for your mother, and one is for me," Elena whispered softly, resting her chin on his head as they looked out the window at the endless, starlit sea. "Together, they mean you will never, ever be alone again."
Leo snuggled deeply into her embrace, turning the first page of his book. Outside, the night was calm, the shadows were gone, and the dawn of a new life had finally arrived.
