Chapter 8

Arthur Vance stepped into the office, his presence immediately dominating the small space, filling the room with the scent of high-end cologne and quiet menace. He ignored Mei entirely at first, walking over to the vice principal’s desk and placing both hands flat on the polished wood, leaning down slightly. "Good morning, Principal Vance," Arthur said smoothly, his voice rich with feigned innocence. "I see you've already received our student welfare committee's literature. Community safety is paramount, especially when violent incidents go unpunished."

Vice Principal Vance shifted uncomfortably in his leather chair, looking between the wealthy donor and the unblinking young woman standing beside him. He was trapped between institutional self-preservation and the undeniable injustice unfolding in front of him. Mei did not flinch, nor did she retreat a single inch. She turned her head slowly, fixing her dark eyes directly on Arthur. "Defamation disguised as community safety is still defamation, Mr. Vance. And hiding behind a student committee doesn't obscure your fingerprints."

Arthur’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a flash of genuine surprise at her composure. He straightened up, adjusting his cuffs, and finally turned his full attention to her. "You have quite a mouth on you, young lady. Bold words for someone whose academic future hangs by a very thin thread. My son was publicly assaulted in these halls, and your record shows a troubling pattern of defiance. The board will be voting on your suspension by end of day."

"My record shows perfect attendance, a 4.0 GPA, and consistent volunteer work," Mei countered, her voice dropping an octave, becoming dangerously quiet and steady. "Meanwhile, your son has three documented disciplinary warnings for harassment that were quietly expunged by this office. I have copies of the unredacted logs." Vice Principal Vance went entirely pale, his eyes darting wildly between them. "You... how did you access those logs?" Vance stammered, horrified. Mei held his gaze, offering no explanation, because in the game of survival, secrets were currency.

Arthur’s expression darkened, the mask of polite corporate philanthropy slipping away to reveal the ruthless tactician underneath. "You are playing a game you cannot possibly win, Mei. I own properties in this district, I fund the athletic programs, and I write the checks that keep this school afloat. You are a blip on a spreadsheet." Mei stepped closer to Arthur, invading his personal space with deliberate, calculated calm. "Spreadsheets can be audited, Mr. Vance. And empires built on intimidation usually collapse from the foundation up."

Before Arthur could formulate a retaliatory threat, the office door clicked open again, and Officer Miller stepped inside, resting a heavy hand on his utility belt. "Morning, gentlemen. I happened to overhear mention of unauthorized literature distribution and possible harassment charges in the hallway," Miller said mildly, his eyes fixed on Arthur. "Should I take an official report, or are we going to resolve this civilly right here?" Arthur glared at the officer, realizing the ambush had failed. With a sharp, venomous look at Mei, Arthur turned and walked out of the office without another word.
