Chapter 14

The Vance estate was a sprawling mansion nestled in the most exclusive hills overlooking the district, blazing with golden light and surrounded by manicured lawns and luxury sedans. Inside the grand ballroom, string quartets played softly against the murmur of wealthy donors, politicians, and school board members sipping champagne. Arthur Vance stood near the center of the room, holding court, wearing a triumphant smile that suggested he believed the minor setback at the school board meeting was already a distant memory.

The heavy double doors at the entrance of the ballroom did not bang open dramatically, nor did anyone shout. Instead, the doors swung smoothly inward, and Mei Lin walked into the room. She wore her black shirt, black trousers, and her safety vest, standing out starkly against the sea of evening gowns and expensive tuxedos like a blade of tempered steel. Behind her walked Officer Miller in uniform and Mr. Harrison in a sharp suit, forming a protective, purposeful escort that immediately silenced the nearest clusters of guests.

All conversations died away in a ripple of stunned silence as heads turned to stare at the unexpected trio. Arthur Vance froze, his champagne glass hovering mid-air, his face draining of color as he realized his security detail at the gates had been completely bypassed. Mei walked down the polished hardwood center aisle with absolute, unhurried grace, her white backpack resting securely on her shoulders, her expression an unreadable mask of absolute authority.

She stopped ten feet away from Arthur, looking him dead in the eye. Without a word, she reached into her backpack, pulled out a thick, bound dossier containing the complete financial audit, the suppressed disciplinary logs, and the digital proof of the intimidation attempt against her brother, and tossed it onto the glass cocktail table in front of him. The heavy thud echoed loudly in the silent ballroom. "You dropped your paperwork, Mr. Vance," Mei said, her voice clear, steady, and carrying effortlessly across the entire room.

Arthur’s hand trembled slightly as he stared at the dossier, the mask of corporate invincibility completely shattering. "You... you have no right to be here," Arthur stammered, his voice losing its polished composure. "Security! Remove this girl immediately!" Officer Miller stepped forward one pace, resting his hand casually on his utility belt, his eyes fixed on Arthur. "Try it, Arthur, and I'll arrest you on charges of interstate witness intimidation and corporate fraud right in front of your entire donor base."

Dr. Sterling, standing nearby, looked down at the dossier on the table, her face turning pale as she recognized the official letterhead of the state investigative committee. The illusion of control had vanished entirely. Mei stood tall, her dark eyes unblinking, looking not like a cornered high school student, but like the architect of a new and honest reality.
