Chapter 13

The arrival of the encrypted photograph changed the battlefield entirely. Arthur Vance was no longer just fighting a PR war over high school lockers and district corruption; he had crossed a personal line by dragging David into the crossfire. Mei sat at her desk in the library during her free period, the digital image glowing faintly on her laptop screen. The telephoto shot proved that Arthur’s reach extended far beyond Oakridge High, touching her family in a direct, cowardly attempt at intimidation.
She knew instinctively that reacting with blind rage or running to the administration would play directly into Arthur’s hands. He wanted her panicked, reactive, and vulnerable. Instead, Mei forced herself into a state of absolute, surgical calm. She pulled up academic rosters, flight schedules, and emergency contact protocols, building a comprehensive contingency plan to ensure David’s immediate safety without alerting him and causing unnecessary panic half a state away.
Officer Miller appeared quietly beside her table, slipping into the empty chair. He had seen the grim, unyielding set of her jaw from across the room and recognized the look of a strategist preparing for a final engagement. "You got a message, didn't you?" Miller asked quietly, his voice low and professional. Mei didn't look up from her screen, but she slid the laptop slightly so he could see the telephoto image of her brother. Miller’s face darkened, a muscle ticking in his jaw. "Cowardly. Using family when he can't win fair and square."
"Arthur Vance thinks leverage is everything," Mei said, her voice chillingly quiet. "He thinks by threatening David, he can force me to drop the audit and crawl away. He doesn't understand that threatening my family doesn't weaken my resolve—it removes every remaining hesitation I had." Miller looked at her with a mixture of deep admiration and profound concern. "What are your orders, Mei? If we need to loop in state investigators regarding interstate intimidation, I can make the call right now."

Mei shook her head slowly, typing a final line of code into her encrypted messaging app to secure David’s campus communications. "State investigators move too slowly, Officer Miller. Arthur is hosting a private charity gala at his estate this Friday night to celebrate the district's upcoming funding vote. Everyone who matters in the county will be there, including the school board and the superintendent." Miller raised an eyebrow. "You're planning to crash the gala?"
"I'm not crashing it," Mei replied, her dark eyes locking onto Miller’s with absolute certainty. "I'm delivering a final audit report directly to every single guest simultaneously. And I'm going to return Arthur’s property in person." Miller let out a slow, breathy whistle, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. "You're something else, kid. Alright. Let me handle the security perimeter. You bring the truth."
