Chapter 1

The fluorescent light hummed above the rows of gray metal lockers, casting a sterile white glare across the polished linoleum floor of Oakridge High. Mei Lin adjusted the heavy straps of her white backpack, feeling the reassuring weight of her laptop and notebooks inside. Her black hair was pulled back into a tight, practical ponytail, and her dark blue safety vest rustled faintly against her black shirt as she took a steady breath. She walked with a measured, deliberate pace, keeping her eyes fixed straight ahead. This hallway was usually a quiet artery of the school, but today it felt unusually heavy, charged with an unspoken tension that made the air feel thin.
Three figures materialized from the angled intersection ahead, their sudden presence cutting through the morning stillness. They were older students, known locally for pushing boundaries and testing the fragile patience of the administration. One of them wore a dark blue shirt and a matching baseball cap pulled low over his forehead, casting a shadow across his eyes. The other two flanked him closely, dressed in identical black shirts and caps, moving with a synchronized swagger that announced their intention to dominate the space. Mei did not slow her pace, though a flicker of caution registered in her dark eyes. She knew these boys; she knew their reputation for casual cruelty masked as teenage boredom.
As they closed the distance, the boy in the blue shirt planted his right arm firmly against a row of lockers, blocking the narrow corridor completely. A smirk played at the corners of his mouth, a calculated expression of petty power designed to provoke a reaction. "Where's the rush, safety patrol?" he muttered, his voice dripping with condescension as his friends chuckled behind him. Mei stopped instantly. There was no panic in her posture, no darting of the eyes, only a cold, focused stillness. She analyzed the angles of their bodies, the careless distribution of their weight, and the lazy overconfidence in the lead boy’s stance.

Instead of retreating or offering a defensive stutter, Mei stepped closer. Her hand shot out with blinding speed, gripping the boy by his upper arm and shoulder before he could process her movement. The smirk vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden flash of genuine confusion. Before his friends could react, Mei dropped her center of gravity, pivoting sharply on her heel. With fluid, devastating precision, she used his own momentum against him, executing a clean backflip throw that sent him crashing hard onto the tiled floor with a heavy, breathless thud.
The hallway fell into absolute, ringing silence. Mei stood directly over the groaning boy, her breathing steady, her expression an unreadable mask of serious resolve. The other two boys froze, their hands hovering uselessly in the air as fear finally pierced their arrogance. Mei adjusted her backpack strap once more, stepped around the fallen bully without a backward glance, and continued her journey down the hall. The corridor had not broken her; instead, it had revealed the quiet, unbreakable strength she carried beneath the surface.
