Chapter 11

"The disciplinary incident was manufactured to cover up an institutional failure," Mei continued, her voice cutting through Dr. Sterling’s gavel strikes with absolute authority. She turned her head slightly, signaling Officer Miller. Miller stepped forward into the aisle, holding up the thick manila folder, and placed copies on the edge of the board’s table. "These documents contain unredacted disciplinary logs proving that Marcus Vance and his associates have committed repeated acts of targeted harassment against multiple students over the past two years—acts that were systematically expunged by Vice Principal Vance under direct financial pressure from Arthur Vance."
The auditorium erupted into chaotic noise. Parents began shouting, teachers whispered frantically among themselves, and Dr. Sterling hammered her gavel repeatedly, demanding order while panic flashed across her face. Arthur Vance stood up abruptly from his chair, his face contorted in sudden rage, dropping the polished corporate mask entirely. "This is slander! Fabricated garbage by a troubled girl with a vendetta! Madam President, cut her mic immediately!"
Before Dr. Sterling could reach for the master switch, Mr. Harrison stepped forward into the light of the stage, raising his voice above the din. "It is not fabricated, Dr. Sterling. I have personally witnessed the harassment, and I have signed affidavits from three other faculty members confirming that administrative resources have been weaponized to protect select students while targeting others." The weight of a respected senior teacher corroborating the claims shifted the room’s gravity instantly. The other two school board members, previously silent rubber-stamps for Dr. Sterling, exchanged nervous, questioning glances.
Mei stood unwavering amid the storm of controversy she had unleashed. She did not raise her voice; she did not celebrate her tactical victory. She simply waited for the noise to subside, her dark eyes fixed on Arthur Vance, who was now visibly sweating under his immaculate collar. The power imbalance that had defined the entire week had fundamentally fractured. Money and influence could buy flyers and intimidate vice principals, but they could not easily survive public exposure under oath and documentation.

Dr. Sterling, realizing that gavel-banging would no longer protect them, leaned into her microphone, her voice strained and defensive. "The board... the board acknowledges receipt of these supplemental documents. We will table the disciplinary vote against Mei Lin pending a formal, independent third-party audit of the school’s disciplinary records and donor transparency." Arthur Vance slammed his fist onto the table, glaring daggers at the board president before turning a venomous, hateful stare toward Mei.
"This isn't over," Arthur hissed into his microphone before cutting the feed, grabbing his leather briefcase, and storming up the aisle past Mei without making physical contact, though his shoulder brushed hers intentionally. Mei did not flinch, nor did she step aside. She simply watched him retreat in defeat. Officer Miller and Mr. Harrison walked up beside her, offering quiet, reassuring nods. The battle for the school had reached a turning point, but Mei knew that wounded predators like Arthur Vance were often at their most dangerous when cornered.
