Chapter 10

The Oakridge High auditorium was vast, dimly lit, and freezing. The red velvet seats stretched back into cavernous shadows, but tonight the front three rows were filled with an uneasy assembly of parents, teachers, and three members of the district school board sitting behind a long, draped folding table on the elevated stage. In the center of the table sat Arthur Vance, looking immaculate in his tailored charcoal suit, whispering confidentially to the board president, a woman whose campaign had been heavily financed by Arthur’s real estate PAC.

Mei stood just inside the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium, adjusting the straps of her white backpack. She wore her black shirt, black trousers, and safety vest—not as a uniform of rebellion, but as a deliberate symbol of her working-class identity that she refused to strip away. Beside her stood Mr. Harrison, his expression grim and resolute, and Officer Miller, who carried a thick manila folder containing the verified financial records and district logs. They were a small army against a machine of immense wealth and power, but they were unyielding.

When the board president, Dr. Evelyn Sterling, tapped her gavel against the wooden podium, the murmurs in the auditorium died down into a tense, suffocating hush. "We will now open the floor to emergency disciplinary reviews and community petitions," Dr. Sterling announced, her voice echoing coldly through the cavernous space. She consulted a printed schedule, her eyes scanning down the page before landing on Mei’s name. "Item four: The petition regarding student conduct and disciplinary action concerning Mei Lin."

Arthur Vance leaned into his microphone, his voice smooth, practiced, and dripping with manufactured paternal concern. "Members of the board, we are facing an unprecedented crisis of campus safety. When violent altercations are glorified and basic rules of civilized conduct are discarded by students, the entire institution suffers. We have documented evidence of aggression, defiance, and a blatant disregard for authority that threatens the learning environment of our children." Murmurs of agreement rippled through the front rows from parents aligned with Arthur’s network.

Dr. Sterling looked down at Mei with practiced disapproval. "Mei Lin, you have five minutes to speak in your defense before the board votes on immediate suspension pending expulsion proceedings. Do you have a statement?" Mei stepped out from the shadows of the doorway, walking down the long center aisle with slow, measured, perfectly even strides. The heavy clack of her shoes against the concrete floor echoed like a drumbeat. She did not rush; she did not cower. She stepped up to the microphone at the foot of the stage, looked directly at Dr. Sterling, and then turned her gaze straight toward Arthur Vance.

"Mr. Vance speaks of safety," Mei began, her voice calm, crystal clear, and completely devoid of fear. "Yet his entire real estate portfolio is built on displacing the families of the students who sit in these very classrooms." A sharp gasp echoed through the room. Dr. Sterling banged her gavel instantly, her face flushing with anger. "Order! You will confine your remarks strictly to the disciplinary incident involving your assault on Marcus Vance, or your time is forfeited!" Mei did not blink. She stood her ground, ready to detonate the truth.
