Chapter 7

The next morning, the school atmosphere felt different—quieter, heavier, as if an invisible storm was gathering just beyond the horizon. Mei walked through the front doors of Oakridge High, her white backpack slung over both shoulders, her black safety vest neat and professional. As she approached her locker to drop off her heavy textbooks, she noticed a small crowd of students gathered around the main notice board near the cafeteria, murmuring and pointing at a fresh stack of bright pink flyers.

Curious, Mei slowed her pace and drifted toward the periphery of the crowd. As the students parted nervously to let her through—the story of the locker hallway throw having achieved mythical status by breakfast—she read the bold black print on the flyer. It was an official-looking petition sponsored by the "Oakridge Student Welfare Committee," calling for an immediate review of campus safety protocols and specifically targeting students who "exhibit violent tendencies and vigilantism." Below the inflammatory text was a grainy, zoomed-in photograph of Mei walking across the courtyard, alongside a fabricated quote attributing hostile statements to her.

A cold anger pooled in Mei’s chest, distinct from the hot-headed rage of teenagers. This wasn't random bullying; this was a targeted, well-funded smear campaign designed to isolate her, ruin her academic reputation, and force the administration’s hand. She knew immediately whose handiwork it was. Arthur Vance had money, influence, and a deep-seated bruised ego that required public humiliation in return. Before anyone could speak to her, she turned away from the board, her jaw set into a hard, uncompromising line.

She marched directly toward the administrative wing, bypassing the waiting area and pushing open the door to Vice Principal Vance’s office without knocking. Vance looked up, startled and annoyed by the abrupt entry. Before he could scold her, Mei dropped a crumpled copy of the pink flyer onto the center of his mahogany desk. "This is libel," she said, her voice shaking slightly with controlled fury. "And it violates school policy against targeted harassment and unauthorized campus distribution."

Vance picked up the paper, squinted at it, and sighed heavily, running a hand over his thinning hair. "Mei, look... I've already had calls this morning from two school board members. Arthur Vance is pushing hard. He claims this flyer is protected student speech expressing genuine safety concerns." Mei leaned over the desk, her dark eyes flashing with intense focus. "Protected speech? It contains a fabricated quote and a stolen photograph used to defame a student. If the administration does not take this down and issue a retraction, I will involve the district superintendent and legal counsel."

Vance blinked, genuinely surprised by the escalation. Most students would cry or cower; Mei threatened litigation and bureaucratic warfare with the cold efficiency of a seasoned professional. Before Vance could formulate a diplomatic response, the office door swung open wide, and Arthur Vance strode into the room uninvited, wearing an expensive tailored suit and a smug, victorious smile that suggested he had orchestrated this exact meeting from the very beginning.
