Chapter 8: The Voice of Truth

""Call Eleanor Vance to the stand.""

Eleanor walked up to the witness box, took the oath, and sat down. Her eyes brushed past Arthur, who gave her a sharp, warning glare—the same look he had used to quiet her at family dinners for fifteen years.

This time, Eleanor did not look away.

""Mrs. Vance,"" Prosecutor Marcus began, ""can you describe Arthur's behavior toward your daughter prior to the moment captured in the photograph?""

""Arthur used fear to control everyone,"" Eleanor testified, her voice clear and resonant. ""If a plate was dropped, if a deadline was missed, if anyone questioned his decisions, the response was immediate intimidation. For years, we called it 'his temper' and excused it. But on that night, when I saw him lift that heavy wood over an eight-year-old child, I realized it wasn't a temper. It was abuse.""

""Objection!"" the defense attorney shouted. ""Speculation and emotional appeals!""

""Overruled,"" the judge stated firmly. ""The witness may continue.""

""My daughter was guilty of moving a place card,"" Eleanor continued, looking directly at the jury panel. ""That was her only crime. And Arthur's response was to use his size and power to crush her spirit. I am here today to ensure he never does that to another child again.""
