Chapter 4: Echoes of the Past

Two weeks later, the preliminary hearing began at the county courthouse. The air inside the hallway was thick with tension. On one side sat Eleanor, accompanied by Julian and her legal counsel. On the other side sat Arthur, surrounded by three high-priced defense attorneys in immaculate charcoal suits.

Arthur looked different without his tailored tuxedo. He wore a simple grey suit, but his eyes still carried the same cold arrogance.

""Mrs. Vance,"" Arthur's lead attorney approached Eleanor during the recess. ""Mr. Vance is willing to establish a two-million-dollar trust fund for Lily's education and future living expenses, on the condition that all physical and digital media from the incident are destroyed and charges are dropped.""

Eleanor looked past the lawyer to Arthur, who gave a brief, dismissive nod, as if offering a business deal to a low-level vendor.

""Tell your client,"" Eleanor said, her voice echoing clearly through the marble corridor, ""that my daughter's dignity and safety are not for sale. We will see him in court.""

Julian, standing nearby, recorded the interaction in his mind, knowing that the real battle wasn't just in the legal filings—it was in breaking the cycle of intimidation that had defined Eleanor's family for generations.
