Chapter 2: The Cracks in the Empire

By midnight, the grand ballroom was empty, leaving behind scattered rose petals, half-eaten cake, and an eerie silence. The local police had taken Arthur in for questioning, along with Julian’s camera memory card secured as primary evidence.
Eleanor sat in the back of a quiet diner three blocks away, wrapping a warm blanket around Lily’s shoulders. The young girl was sipping hot chocolate, her small hands clutching the ceramic mug as if it were the only anchor keeping her grounded.
""Mommy?"" Lily whispered, her eyes wide and hesitant. ""Is Uncle Arthur going to come back?""
Eleanor took her daughter’s hand, rubbing her thumb over the child's small knuckles. ""No, sweetie. He won't be coming near us again. I promise you.""
""I didn't mean to mess up the wedding,"" Lily said softly, her chin quivering. ""I just wanted to make the table look pretty.""
""You did nothing wrong,"" Eleanor said firmly, looking straight into her daughter's eyes so there would be no doubt. ""Listen to me, Lily. Nothing you did justifies what happened. You are safe now.""
The diner door jangled, and Julian walked in, shaking the light drizzle off his dark coat. He carried two warm paper cups and a small black notebook. He pulled up a chair at their booth, offering Eleanor a gentle, tired smile.
""The police have the digital files,"" Julian said in a low tone. ""The officer in charge said the evidence is indisputable. But Arthur’s lawyer is already pushing for a settlement outside of court.""

Eleanor set her tea cup down with a sharp click. ""He thinks money fixes everything. It’s how he’s controlled our family for fifteen years.""
""Then don't let him,"" Julian replied quietly. ""You have a voice now, Eleanor. And you're not standing alone.""
