The financial evidence brought by Thomas sealed Arthur's fate. As federal investigators analyzed the documents provided by Eleanor and Thomas, additional charges of wire fraud, embezzlement, and tax evasion were formally filed against Arthur Vance.
The family members who had previously backed Arthur began to step away one by one. Victoria, the aunt who had demanded Eleanor drop the charges, arrived at Eleanor's apartment on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
She stood in the doorway, looking older and diminished without Arthur's wealth shielding her.
""I was wrong, Eleanor,"" Victoria said, her eyes brimming with tears. ""I was so afraid of losing the security Arthur provided that I turned a blind eye to what he was doing to you... and to Lily.""
Eleanor stood at the door, her expression gentle but firm. ""Security built on someone else's suffering isn't security, Aunt Victoria. It's a cage.""
