Chapter 9

Back at the corporate headquarters, the atmosphere had shifted from paralyzed fear to a tense, industrious focus. Evelyn sat at her newly reinstated desk in the executive suite, reviewing the updated asset recovery spreadsheets. The damage caused by Arthur and Chloe was extensive, but the swiftness of the federal intervention had managed to preserve the core holdings of the family enterprise.

Sarah entered the office carrying a small stack of physical correspondence, placing it neatly beside the laptop. "Mrs. Vance, the legal team has finalized the paperwork regarding the dissolution of the fraudulent subsidiaries. Furthermore, the board has unanimously voted to restore the original charter drafted by your late husband."

Evelyn nodded, signing a document with a smooth, practiced stroke of her fountain pen. "Good. Ensure that the charitable grants that were frozen during their tenure are immediately reinstated with retroactive funding. Those community programs suffered enough because of corporate greed."

"It will be done by the end of the day," Sarah said, lingering for a moment before speaking hesitantly. "If I may ask, Madam... have you heard anything regarding the legal proceedings downtown?"

"Only that their defense strategy is collapsing under the weight of their own documentation," Evelyn replied without looking up from her papers. "Greed creates blind spots, Sarah. When you spend your entire life taking shortcuts and stepping on others to reach the top, you never build a foundation strong enough to withstand a storm."

The intercom on the desk chimed softly, and the voice of the head of security announced a visitor in the lobby. "Mrs. Vance, there is a gentleman here asking to speak with you regarding the liquidation of the residential estate's auxiliary properties. He claims he represents the independent creditors."

Evelyn paused, laying her pen down beside the pristine white paper. "Send him up. It's time to settle the final accounts and clear the air entirely."
