Chapter 7

The boardroom of Vance Global Enterprises had never felt so cold. At precisely nine in the morning, the heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, locking out the noise of the financial district below. Around the massive glass table sat the remaining junior executives, individuals who had kept their heads down during Chloe’s reckless expansion, terrified of losing their positions. They sat in absolute silence, staring at the empty leather chair at the head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the CEO, now occupied by Arthur’s vacant disgrace.
The side door opened, and Evelyn walked into the room. She wore a striking emerald green blazer over a simple black dress, her posture radiating an effortless, commanding elegance. Every eye in the room fixed upon her. There was no mockery now, no condescending whispers about her age or her mental acuity. They had seen the federal indictments; they had read the forensic reports detailing how Chloe and Arthur had systematically looted the capital reserves to fund their lavish lifestyle.
Evelyn walked slowly to the head of the table, resting her hands lightly on the back of the central chair. She did not sit down immediately. Instead, her gaze swept across the faces of the executives, reading the fear and lingering guilt etched into their expressions.
"Good morning," Evelyn said, her voice calm, clear, and resonant within the acoustically polished room. "I trust you have all had the opportunity to review the preliminary restructuring documents distributed by the audit committee at dawn."
Silence hung heavy in the air until David, the senior head of corporate compliance, cleared his throat and nodded slowly. "We have, Mrs. Vance. The findings are... devastating. Over forty million dollars in unauthorized capital transfers, hidden shell companies, and fraudulent asset write-offs."
"Devastating indeed," Evelyn agreed, her tone unyielding. "And yet, every single transaction required a signature, a nod, or a convenient blind eye from someone sitting at this very table. For months, you allowed ambition to override your fiduciary duties. You permitted a hostile takeover of a company built on decades of genuine labor, all because you feared the noise of incompetent leadership."

An uncomfortable murmur rippled through the room. One of the regional directors started to speak, attempting to deflect responsibility. "Mrs. Vance, we were under immense pressure from Arthur and Chloe. If we questioned their directives, we were immediately threatened with termination."
Evelyn raised a single hand, cutting him off instantly. "Pressure is not an excuse for cowardice. However, unlike my former stepdaughter, I am not interested in wanton destruction. I am interested in survival and renewal. Starting today, every fraudulent contract is voided, every misappropriated asset is returning to the foundation trust, and this company returns to its core principles of integrity and sustainable growth. Those who cannot commit to that standard may tender their resignations before noon."
