Chapter 3

Sunlight pierced through the high arched windows of the estate, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished parquet floor of the study. Chloe sat at the massive walnut desk, a cup of freshly brewed espresso in hand, reviewing the preliminary stock projections for the upcoming merger. Her red dress from the previous night had been replaced by a sharp, cream-colored pantsuit that projected executive dominance. The humiliation inflicted upon Evelyn had faded into a minor, amusing memory—a fleeting validation of her total supremacy within the household.

The door opened without a knock, and Arthur strode into the room, his face pale beneath his carefully maintained tan. He was not carrying his usual leather briefcase; instead, his tablet trembled slightly in his grip. He did not greet Chloe with his customary morning kiss or casual banter.

"We have a problem," Arthur said, his voice dropping an octave as he tossed the tablet onto the desk directly in front of her.

Chloe frowned, annoyed by the interruption to her morning routine. "Arthur, if this is about the catering for the gala, I already told you to handle the—"

"It's not the catering," Arthur interrupted, leaning over the desk with wide, panicked eyes. "It's the primary holding accounts. Look at the ledger. All of them. They are frozen. Every single transaction we initiated last night has been blocked by an overarching security protocol we didn't even know existed."

Chloe leaned forward, her eyes scanning the digital lines of code and financial warnings flashing in crimson across the screen. Her sophisticated demeanor flickered for a fraction of a second. The authorization codes required to freeze those assets were restricted to the CEO and the founding shareholder. As CEO, Arthur held supreme operational control, or so he had believed ever since Evelyn’s supposed cognitive decline had been documented by their family physician.

"That's impossible," Chloe whispered, her fingers flying across the keyboard to override the system restriction. A stark, unyielding error message popped up instantly: Access Denied. Master Trustee Override Active.

A cold shiver ran down Chloe's spine as she remembered the unblinking, steady gaze Evelyn had fixed upon the camera just hours before. The old woman hadn't broken down because she wasn't a victim; she was the architect of a trap that had just snapped shut.
