Chapter 5

The distinct sirens of federal enforcement vehicles echoed up the private driveway of the estate just as the grandfather clock chimed three in the afternoon. The sound was sharp, unyielding, and impossible to ignore. Arthur rushed to the tall living room window, pulling back the heavy velvet curtain just enough to watch three unmarked black sedans pull up to the front entrance, their emergency lights flashing a harsh red and blue against the manicured hedges.

Chloe stood frozen near the fireplace, the sheer impossibility of the situation crashing down upon her mind. For months, she had orchestrated the gradual displacement of Evelyn, believing she was the smartest person in any room. She had secured the compliance of corrupt physicians, manipulated the board of directors through subtle intimidation, and convinced Arthur that his financial future depended entirely on marginalizing the aging matriarch. Yet, in less than twenty-four hours, the entire scaffolding of her ambition had dissolved into thin air.

Heavy knocks sounded at the front door—not the polite, deferential rap of visiting business associates, but the authoritative pounding of federal marshals. Evelyn remained seated in her usual armchair by the hearth, her posture unyielding, calmly sipping her lemon water as if she were waiting for an afternoon book club to convene.

Arthur turned around, his face drained of all color, his voice trembling as he looked at his wife. "Chloe... what do we do? If they look at the offshore accounts, we're finished. Everything is tied to our names."

"Stop panicking," Chloe snapped, though her own hands shook as she clutched her handbag. "We have legal representation. We have retainer agreements filed with the best corporate defense firm in the city."

"Your legal representation dropped us ten minutes ago," Julian said, walking into the room with his phone pressed tightly to his ear before dropping his hand in utter defeat. "The firm received a formal notice of conflict of interest tied to the forensic audit Evelyn submitted this morning. We're completely on our own."

The front door swung open as domestic staff hastily unlocked it under federal orders. Two investigators in dark suits, accompanied by local law enforcement officers, walked purposefully into the grand living room. They did not look at the expensive artwork or the luxurious furnishings; their eyes were fixed entirely upon Arthur and Chloe.

Lead Investigator Vance stepped forward, flashing a warrant that gleamed under the chandelier light. "Arthur Vance, Chloe Vance, you are both formally served with an emergency asset freeze and a subpoena to appear before the federal grand jury regarding corporate fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy."

Evelyn watched the exchange with quiet dignity, never once altering her expression as the cold reality of justice finally enveloped the people who had tried to cast her aside.
