Chapter 4

Panic spread through the corporate suite like wildfire. By noon, Julian and Marcus had arrived uninvited at the estate, bursting through the front doors with frantic energy that completely shattered the sophisticated calm Chloe usually demanded in her home. They gathered around the kitchen island, abandoning all pretense of polite social decorum as they stared at their respective smartphones, watching their personal investment portfolios plummet in real-time as automated margin calls triggered across the board.
"How could this happen?" Julian shouted, slamming his palm against the marble countertop. "We signed the merger agreement with Vanguard Logistics yesterday afternoon! The capital was supposed to hit our operational accounts by nine a.m. today!"
"It didn't hit because the routing numbers point to a dormant trust that predates the company's public incorporation," Chloe replied, her voice dangerously low. She had spent the last three hours attempting to contact their primary legal counsel, only to be informed that the senior partner was currently in a closed-door meeting with federal regulatory investigators.
Arthur paced the length of the kitchen, his polished loafers clicking rhythmically against the floor. "Where is she? Where is Evelyn?"
As if summoned by their collective dread, the kitchen doorway grew silent. Evelyn walked into the room, wearing a simple, impeccably tailored navy blue wool dress. Every trace of the previous night's soup had been meticulously removed; her grey hair was once again pulled back into a flawless bun, and her posture was as straight as a soldier's. She walked with a measured, deliberate pace, ignoring the three panicked men entirely as she moved toward the espresso machine to pour herself a cup of hot water with lemon.
Chloe stood up from her chair, her professional composure fracturing into bitter fury. "What did you do, Evelyn? What kind of game are you playing?"
Evelyn turned around slowly, holding the delicate porcelain cup between both hands. She took a quiet sip before speaking, her voice entirely devoid of emotion, carrying the weight of absolute authority.
"I am simply cleaning house, Chloe," Evelyn said calmly, her eyes meeting her stepdaughter's with terrifying clarity. "For thirty years, I watched my husband build a legacy based on integrity and strategic foresight. You and your associates mistook my silence for weakness, and my patience for senility. You believed that a few forged signatures and a manipulated medical evaluation could strip me of my life's work. You were catastrophically mistaken."

Marcus took a step forward, his face flushed with anger. "You can't just freeze corporate assets without a court order! We will sue you into oblivion!"
Evelyn offered a faint, chilling smile. "Please, try. You will find that the courts have already received the complete forensic audit of every shell company you established over the last five years. Enjoy your afternoon, gentlemen. The authorities will be arriving shortly."
