Chapter 8

While Evelyn systematically rebuilt the corporate foundation downtown, the reality of their downfall was setting in for Arthur and Chloe within the stark, fluorescent-lit confines of the federal detention facility. Seated across from each other in a cramped visitation booth separated by thick, scratched plexiglass, the couple looked worlds away from the triumphant hosts of the gala just days prior.
Chloe wore a standard orange jumpsuit that swallowed her frame, her makeup completely washed away, revealing pale skin and dark circles under her hollow eyes. She gripped the plastic telephone receiver so tightly her knuckles turned white.
"This is all your fault, Arthur," Chloe hissed through the audio feed, her voice laced with venom. "If you hadn't been so sloppy with the offshore paper trails, the federal investigators wouldn't have found the primary routing codes so easily!"
Arthur stared back at her with equal fury, his expensive suit replaced by identical prison garb that mocked his once-lofty status. "My fault? I was executing your brilliant master plan to push your stepmother out of the picture! You were the one who insisted on humiliating her publicly, provoking her into retaliating with the full force of her legal team!"
"I humiliated her because she was a useless relic standing in the way of our future!" Chloe slammed her palm against the glass partition, a desperate, hysterical edge creeping into her voice. "And now we have nothing. The bank accounts are seized, our personal assets are frozen under the RICO statutes, and our defense attorneys won't even answer our calls because we can't pay their retainers."

"Because you spent every liquid asset on luxury cars, designer gowns, and high-society galas while pretending we had infinite capital!" Arthur shouted back, drawing a sharp warning tap on the glass from a correctional officer patrolling the aisle.
Chloe slumped back in her metal chair, the harsh reality finally piercing her impenetrable ego. They had played a high-stakes game of greed and cruelty, utterly convinced that their victim was helpless. They had poured scalding soup over an old woman's head, laughing as they basked in their perceived absolute dominance. Now, trapped behind glass walls with their empire reduced to ashes, they realized that Evelyn hadn't just beaten them at their own game—she had dismantled their entire existence with the quiet precision of a master chess player.
