Chapter 6

The grand estate, usually echoing with the haughty laughter of high-society gatherings and corporate power-brokering, fell into an eerie, suffocating silence once the federal investigators departed with Arthur and Chloe in tow. Julian and Marcus had already fled through the rear service exit, abandoning their sinking ship the moment the warrants were served, realizing too late that loyalty among thieves was a myth.
Evelyn stood alone in the vast living room, walking slowly toward the large bay window that overlooked the sprawling gardens. The afternoon sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the lawn where she had spent decades planting roses with her late husband. She felt no sense of triumphant glee—only a profound, heavy exhaustion that comes with cleaning up the wreckage left behind by ungrateful minds.
The front doors opened once more, though this time it was not law enforcement, but Sarah, the loyal longtime estate manager who had been forced into silence during Chloe’s hostile takeover. Sarah walked in quietly, carrying a fresh pot of Earl Grey tea on a silver tray.
"They're gone, Madam," Sarah said softly, setting the tray down on the mahogany table with a gentle clink. "The accounts have been successfully secured under the original family foundation trust. The board members who conspired with Arthur have already submitted their resignations."
Evelyn turned around and offered Sarah a warm, genuine smile—the first true expression of emotion she had shown in days. "Thank you, Sarah. You showed remarkable courage standing by me while those vultures circled the house."
"I knew the master wouldn't have wanted his life's work destroyed by shortsighted children," Sarah replied, pouring a cup of tea and handing it to Evelyn with steady hands. "What are your instructions for tomorrow? The emergency board meeting is scheduled for nine a.m. to ratify the restructuring."

Evelyn took the cup, inhaling the familiar, comforting aroma of the tea. "Tomorrow, we begin the real work, Sarah. We strip away the vanity projects, cancel the fraudulent subsidiaries, and restore the charitable endowments that Chloe tried to dissolve for her personal gain. A business is only as strong as its moral foundation. My family forgot that fundamental truth, and they paid the ultimate price for their arrogance."
As the evening darkness settled over the estate, Evelyn sat by the window, no longer an isolated victim of familial cruelty, but the undisputed guardian of a restored legacy, ready to face whatever dawn would bring.
