Chapter 5: The Vanishing Line**

Inside Room 404, the monitors suddenly erupted into a frantic sequence of high-pitched alarms.

“V-Fib! She’s crashing!” a nurse shouted.

Dr. Keller, the chief pediatric intensivist, burst through the doors with the crash cart. “The toxin is releasing from lipid storage as her body warms up! Charge to fifty joules! Clear!”

Thomas rushed to the glass window, his heart in his throat. Through the glass, he watched his little girl’s fragile body lift off the mattress with each electric shock. Leo stood right beside him, pressing his small hands against the glass, his lips moving in silent, desperate prayer.

“Come on, Lily,” Leo whispered, tears streaming freely now. “You promised we’d plant the sunflowers this spring. Don’t you give up.”

“Charging to seventy-five! Clear!” Dr. Keller called out again.

*Thump.*

The jagged line on the EKG screen shuddered, stretched out, and then snapped back into a steady, rhythmic cadence.

*Beep. Beep. Beep.*

Dr. Keller wiped sweat from his brow, exhaling a long, shuddering breath. He stepped out into the corridor and pulled down his surgical mask. “The charcoal filtration and reversal agents caught it just in time. The poison is clearing her bloodstream. Thomas… her brain activity is intact. She’s going to survive.”

Thomas slumped against the wall, weeping openly for the first time in years, pulling young Leo into a fierce, protective embrace.
