Chapter 2: Sirens in the Downpour**

The scream of emergency sirens tore through the quiet rural valley, slicing through the gray sheet of rain. Parameds leapt from the ambulance before the wheels had fully stopped spinning on the gravel path.

“Paralytic toxicity! Suspected induced coma mimicking brain death!” Thomas shouted over the storm, lifting Lily’s limp, featherlight body out of the casket into his own arms. He refused to let the paramedics take her entirely, running alongside the gurney as they locked the oxygen mask over her tiny mouth.

Inside the ambulance, the cardiac monitor flatlined with an ominous, continuous hum, then suddenly blipped: *twenty-two beats per minute*.

“Body temperature is eighty-eight degrees. Severe hypothermia combined with neuromuscular blockade,” Lead Paramedic Martinez yelled into his radio. “St. Jude Trauma, prep pediatric resuscitation bay! We have an active poisoning with near-fatal asphyxiation!”

Behind the ambulance, parked along the tree line, Victoria stood under a black umbrella. She wasn’t crying anymore. The theatrical grief had evaporated from her features, replaced by a cold, calculating terror. Her gloved fingers dug furiously into her designer handbag, pulling out a burner phone.

“Sterling, the casket was opened,” she hissed into the receiver, her voice sharp as broken glass. “The boy was at the house. He saw the vial. Erase the digital logs and get the private jet ready in Teterboro. If that girl wakes up and speaks, both of our lives are over.”

She snapped the phone shut, turned on her designer heels, and slipped into her black SUV without looking back at the open grave.
