Chapter 12: Lessons of the Soil**

That summer, Thomas bought a modest, beautiful cedar home adjacent to the children's sanctuary. In the backyard, overlooking a crystalline mountain lake, they built a massive garden.
Leo showed Lily how to plant heirloom sunflower seeds, pressing them gently two inches into the nutrient-rich, dark soil.
“Isn’t it weird, Leo?” Lily asked, wiping dirt onto her yellow sundress. “Things go under the dirt to die, but seeds go under the dirt to live.”
Thomas, leaning against the wooden fence with two glasses of lemonade, paused to listen to his children.
Leo patted the warm earth down with his palms. “Dirt doesn’t just bury things, Lily. Sometimes the dark is just where things wait to grow strong enough to find the light.”
