Chapter 1: The Pounding on the Oak**

The rain did not fall; it struck. It whipped against the polished brass latches of the pristine white casket hovering suspended over the churned mud. Thomas Vance dropped to his knees in the sludge, his bespoke Italian suit instantly soaking through, ruined and forgotten. His breath tore out of his chest in ragged, desperate gasps.
“Pry it open!” Thomas roared, his knuckles turning stark white as he gripped the chrome handles. “Now! Get the crowbars from the hearse!”
The pallbearers hesitated, frozen by shock and legal terror, but the sheer, primal fury in the grieving father’s eyes left no room for hesitation. Two gravediggers sprinted through the pelting rain, returning with heavy iron bars. With a sickening, metallic screech, the airtight rubber seal of the luxury casket ruptured.
Thomas ripped the lid upward.
Lying on ivory satin, six-year-old Lily looked like a porcelain doll carved for an altar of grief. Her skin was a translucent, icy alabaster. Her dark eyelashes lay motionless against hollowed cheeks. Thomas leaned down, trembling uncontrollably, and pressed his ear to her tiny chest.
Nothing. Just the roaring downpour and his own hammering pulse.
“She’s gone, Thomas!” Victoria wailed from behind him, her black leather gloves clutched against her throat, pearls trembling against her collarbone. Rain streaked down her powdered cheeks, washing away layers of expensive makeup. “You’re torturing yourself! The boy is delusional—he's a gutter orphan who doesn't know what he's saying!”
Eight-year-old Leo stepped forward into the pit, mud caking his bare shins, his hazel eyes burning with fierce, unyielding certainty. “Put your thumb under her jawline, Mr. Vance! Deep near the carotid! Don’t listen to her—count the beats!”
Thomas pressed his thumb into the hollow of his daughter’s throat. Ten seconds of agonizing silence stretched into eternity. Then—*thump*.
A faint, ghostly vibration against his skin. One beat every eight seconds.

“She’s alive,” Thomas whispered, his voice cracking before exploding into a deafening scream of salvation. “Call an ambulance! SHE IS ALIVE!”
