Chapter 3: The Witness in the Shadows**

The pediatric intensive care unit at St. Jude Children’s Hospital was a sterile world of rhythmic beeps and hissing ventilators. Thomas sat on a plastic chair beside Lily’s bed, his large hand completely enveloping her cold, intravenous-line-tethered fingers.

Across the room sat Leo, wrapped in an oversized hospital blanket, holding a warm cup of hot chocolate that he hadn't taken a single sip of.

“Leo,” Thomas spoke softly, his voice heavy with exhaustion and awe. “How did you know?”

The boy looked down at his scuffed sneakers. “My mom died of cancer two years ago in your estate’s guest cottage. Before she passed, she told me that your late wife—Lily’s real mom—was her sister. She made me swear on a bible that I would always watch over Lily from the shadows, because she never trusted Victoria.”

Thomas froze, stunned by the revelation. “You’re… Sarah’s son?”

Leo nodded slowly. “Yesterday afternoon, Lily called me from the back garden, crying that she was thirsty. I climbed the trellis to the second-floor terrace to bring her an apple. Through the library window, I saw Victoria and Dr. Sterling. She had a glass dropper with blue liquid. She emptied it into Lily’s evening chamomile tea. Dr. Sterling said, *‘Three drops slows the pulse to near-zero within six hours. The coroner will rule it acute congenital heart failure. You’ll be fifty million dollars richer by Monday.’*”

Tears traced tracks through the dried mud on Leo’s cheeks. “I tried to sneak in to steal the cup, but the security guards threw me off the property. I ran all the way to the cemetery through the storm. I thought I was too late.”
