Chapter 4: The Gilded Conspiracy**

Thomas walked out of the ICU room, the warmth in his heart hardening into titanium. He dialed Detective Marcus Miller, a decorated homicide detective and a lifelong friend from his military days.
“Marcus,” Thomas said without preamble. “My daughter was buried alive today. Run a full toxicological screen for Tetrodotoxin and high-dose neuromuscular blockers. And freeze all accounts tied to the Vance Family Trust immediately.”
Within an hour, Detective Miller arrived at the hospital accompanied by two forensic investigators. In his hands was a red folder containing the initial background sweep on Victoria Vance, formerly Victoria Sterling.
“She lied about her identity when you married her three years ago, Thomas,” Miller said, opening the case file. “Her maiden name isn't Sterling by coincidence—Dr. Arthur Sterling, the chief medical examiner who signed Lily’s death certificate without an autopsy, is her biological brother.”
Thomas’s jaw tightened until his teeth ground together. “The trust fund.”
“Exactly,” Miller confirmed. “Your late wife’s estate stipulated that the fifty-million-dollar trust would transfer completely to Lily on her seventh birthday—which is next Tuesday. But if Lily died of natural causes before turning seven, eighty percent of the principal reverted directly to the surviving legal guardian: Victoria.”
