Chapter 8 - The Arraignment Confrontation

The courtroom gallery was suffocatingly hot, packed to capacity with financial journalists, curious onlookers, and federal agents whispering among themselves. The air smelled of old paper, floor wax, and palpable tension. Seated at the defense table, Mateo looked a shadow of his former self. The tailored dark suit he had worn the day before was rumpled, his shirt collar unbuttoned, and his trimmed beard seemed sharper against his pale, sunken cheeks.
When the heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom swung open, every head turned. Clara walked down the center aisle with slow, deliberate steps. She wore a simple, elegant navy blue maternity dress, her long dark hair pulled back into a sleek low ponytail. Her expression was completely unreadable—neither triumphant nor fearful, just entirely resolute.
As she took her seat at the prosecution's witness consultation table, Mateo stared at her across the aisle. His eyes were wide with a mixture of desperation and furious disbelief. He stood up abruptly, leaning over the partition.
"Clara! Don't do this!" Mateo shouted, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of the courtroom before the bailiffs could react. "Think of our child! You're destroying everything we built!"
The judge banged his gavel twice, a sharp, cracking sound that silenced the room instantly. "Mr. Santos, one more outburst and you will be held in direct contempt of court. Sit down immediately."
Mateo slowly sank back into his chair, his chest heaving as he glared at Clara with undisguised hatred. Clara didn't even flinch. She simply adjusted her folder on the table and looked straight up at the bench, acknowledging the judge with a respectful nod.
"The prosecution calls Mrs. Clara Santos to the stand," the lead prosecutor announced clearly, stepping away from the podium.
A collective murmur rippled through the gallery. Mateo’s defense attorney jumped to his feet, objecting vehemently. "Your Honor, the defense objects. Mrs. Santos is legally still the defendant's wife under an unfinalized separation agreement; spousal privilege applies."
The judge looked down over his reading glasses, his gaze shifting to Clara. "How do you respond to the defense's motion regarding spousal privilege, Mrs. Santos?"
Clara stood up gracefully, smoothing her dress over her belly, and walked toward the witness box with absolute poise. She placed her hand on the Bible, took a steady breath, and turned to face the judge directly.
"Spousal privilege protects marital confidences, Your Honor," Clara said, her voice clear and resonant, carrying to every corner of the room. "However, it does not apply to ongoing criminal conspiracies executed to defraud federal tax agencies and hide assets from an unborn child's legal trust."

Mateo gasped, lunging forward again, but the bailiffs instantly pinned his arms to his sides.
