Chapter 4 - The Closing Net

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers painted the marble walls of the foyer in erratic, dizzying strokes. The officers moved with swift, practiced precision, surrounding Mateo before he could even register the gravity of the situation.
"Mateo Santos, you are being detained for questioning regarding corporate embezzlement and financial fraud," the lead detective announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.
Mateo struggled against the officer's grip, his face contorted in rage as he glared past them at Clara. "This is a trap! She set me up! Look at her—she’s been recording everything!"
The detective turned his attention to Clara, eyeing her pregnant form and the calm composure in her dark eyes. "Ma'am, step back please. Do you have any knowledge of illegal activities conducted on these premises?"
Clara took a deliberate step backward, her expression remaining entirely neutral. "I am simply a wife who was just handed divorce papers, Officer. My husband has always handled his own business affairs."
Mateo roared, twisting violently against the cuffs. "Search her pockets! She has a recording device! She’s been gathering evidence for months!"
Elena, the corporate attorney, watched the scene unfold with cold detachment, realizing her own career was now tied to a sinking ship. She quietly began backing toward the exit, but an investigator intercepted her path with a swift block.
"Nobody leaves," the investigator ordered.
Clara watched Mateo with a quiet, devastating intensity. The man who had demeaned her, who had treated her pregnancy as a corporate liability, and who had forced her to sign away her rights with a cold stroke of a pen, was now completely powerless.
"You won't get away with this, Clara!" Mateo screamed as they forced him toward the open door. "You’ll end up with nothing!"
"I already have everything I need, Mateo," Clara whispered softly to herself as the heavy oak door slammed shut behind them, cutting off his frantic voice.
Silence descended upon the grand foyer once more, broken only by the distant wail of police sirens fading into the rainy night. Elena turned to Clara, her professional demeanor cracking. "What do you want, Clara? You can't possibly think you'll walk away clean from this."

Clara pulled her hand out of her pocket, revealing the tiny digital recorder resting on her palm. She clicked a button, and Elena's own voice echoed from the small speaker, detailing the illegal offshore transfers.
