Chapter 1 - The Stroke of a Pen

The bedroom air hung heavy with the scent of lavender and cold, unyielding silence. Clara sat upright on the edge of the crisp white mattress, her fingers trembling slightly as she clutched the black ballpoint pen. Beneath the tip of the pen lay the ultimate betrayal—divorce papers clipped firmly to a dark wooden board. Her long dark hair cascaded over the shoulders of her white V-neck wrap dress, framing a face that fought valiantly to remain composed despite the storm raging within her pregnant belly. Standing directly behind her, casting a long, intimidating shadow across the sheets, was Mateo. His dark suit jacket stretched tightly over broad shoulders, and his trimmed beard framed a mouth set into a line of absolute, unyielding demand.

"Pumirma ka na diyan sa divorce papers," Mateo commanded, his voice a low, steady rumble that brook no argument.

Clara stopped breathing for a fraction of a second. She did not turn around to face him. She refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing the tear that threatened to spill over her lower lashes.

"Is this really what it has come to, Mateo?" Clara asked, her voice dangerously quiet, slicing through the tension like a razor. "Eight years of building a life, erased because your precious corporate empire demands a clean slate?"

Mateo leaned closer, his hot breath brushing against the nape of her neck. "Don't make this harder than it already is, Clara. You know the board's conditions. An heir born out of wedlock to a failing legacy won't survive the merger. Sign it."

"And what about the child?" Clara whispered, her grip tightening on the pen until her knuckles turned ghostly white. "Does this little life mean nothing to your spreadsheet?"

"It means everything," Mateo snapped, losing a fraction of his composure. "That is why you need to sign right now before the lawyers arrive."

Clara lowered her head. The pen met the paper. The ink flowed smoothly, tracing the final letters of her married name. As the last stroke settled, Mateo exhaled a long breath of relief, reaching out to snatch the clipboard away. But as he pulled it back, a tiny red blinking light caught Clara's eye from beneath the bed frame.
