Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guest in the Foyer

The grand foyer chandelier cast a cold, brilliant light over the Italian marble floors. Blocking the heavy double doors stood Elena, Mateo’s formidable corporate attorney, holding a sealed manila envelope that bore the embossed crest of the city's highest court. Elena’s sharp eyes darted from Mateo to Clara, lingering for a moment on the pregnant woman’s composed, unreadable face.

"You're early, Elena," Mateo said, narrowing his eyes as he stepped down the final step of the staircase. "I told you I would bring the signed papers to the office myself."

Elena didn't smile. She stepped further into the house, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone. "Plans changed, Mateo. The board just received an anonymous tip regarding the asset liquidation tied to your offshore accounts. The merger is currently frozen."

Mateo froze, his hand tightening around the leather briefcase holding Clara's freshly signed divorce papers. "That’s impossible. Those accounts are completely isolated. Who could possibly know about them?"

Clara stood a few steps behind Mateo, her hand resting safely inside her dress pocket, feeling the contour of the hidden recorder. A faint, knowing smile touched the corner of her lips, though she quickly masked it as Elena turned her gaze toward her.

"Mrs. Santos," Elena said coldly, addressing Clara by her soon-to-be-former surname. "I advise you not to leave the premises. The prosecution has expanded their investigation to include marital property fraud."

Mateo spun around, his face draining of color. He glared at Clara with sudden, terrifying suspicion. "You did this," he hissed, taking a step toward her. "You planned this whole thing."

Clara met his furious gaze without flinching. She lifted her chin, her voice steady and chillingly calm. "If I planned anything, Mateo, I would have made sure my signature wasn't the only thing binding us to this sinking ship."

Elena raised a hand, interrupting their confrontation. "Spare me the domestic drama. The police are already outside. Mr. Santos, you need to come with us right now."

Before Mateo could lunge forward or demand answers, heavy footsteps echoed from the porch. The front door was pushed completely open, revealing two uniformed police officers flanked by federal investigators holding search warrants.
