Chapter 5 - The Passenger Seat Reality

The heavy leather seat of the luxury sedan felt cold against Clara's back as the car glided silently down the coastal highway. Outside, the rain beat a relentless rhythm against the tinted windows, blurring the neon city lights into smears of red and gold. Mateo sat rigidly in the driver's seat, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel with terrifying intensity. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle twitched rhythmically beneath his trimmed beard. Neither of them had spoken a word for the past twenty miles.

Clara sat in the passenger seat, her gaze fixed steadily out the side window. Her white V-neck wrap dress seemed to glow faintly in the dim dashboard illumination. With her left hand, she gently stroked her pregnant belly, feeling the rhythmic, comforting kicks of her baby. She was exhausted, yet a deep, unwavering resilience kept her posture straight and unbroken.

Without taking his eyes off the wet asphalt, Mateo slammed his palm against the steering wheel. "Turn off that goddamned music," he snarled, his voice breaking the suffocating silence.

Clara didn't blink. She glanced toward the center console. The car's dashboard screen displayed a music streaming app playing softly via Bluetooth connection, the track title glowing in steady blue letters. She hadn't turned the music on; it had started automatically the moment Mateo synced his phone upon leaving the police precinct.

"I didn't touch the stereo, Mateo," Clara replied evenly, her voice devoid of any fear. "You must have left your playlist on shuffle."

Mateo cursed under his breath, reaching over to violently swipe at the touchscreen. The music cut off abruptly, plunging the car into an even heavier, more oppressive quiet.

"You think you won, don't you?" Mateo sneered, his eyes darting to the rearview mirror before glancing back at the road. "The moment we reach the estate, my legal team will tear those audio files to shreds. Illegal wiretapping is inadmissible."

Clara let out a soft, humorless breath. "Who said anything about wiretapping? Elena handed me a flash drive containing the full financial audit before the police even arrived at the house."

Mateo slammed on the brakes, causing the car to swerve slightly on the slick highway before stabilizing with a screech of rubber. He turned his head, staring at her with wide, panicked eyes. "What did you just say?"

Clara slowly turned her head to look straight into his frantic, bloodshot eyes. "I said, your lawyer realized you were going down alone, Mateo. And she decided to secure her own future by handing over the master keys to your kingdom."
