Chapter 2 - The Red Light Beneath the Bed

Mateo yanked the clipboard from the bed, his eyes scanning the signature line with predatory satisfaction. The ink was barely dry, yet he treated the document like a sacred trophy. He didn't notice the sudden shift in Clara’s posture. Her calm, resolute expression remained locked straight ahead, but her peripheral vision was fixed entirely on the small, rhythmic pulse of red light blinking rhythmically from the dust-covered darkness beneath the mattress.

"Finally," Mateo muttered under his breath, sliding the papers into his leather briefcase with clinical efficiency. "The courier will pick up the duplicate set downstairs. Pack your overnight bag. The driver is waiting in the driveway."

Clara stood up slowly, smoothing the wrinkles of her white V-neck wrap dress. Her hands rested protectively over her six-month pregnant belly. She felt the heavy thud of her baby kicking, almost as if the child sensed the danger enveloping them both.

"You're rushing me out of my own home, Mateo?" she asked, her voice eerily calm. "We aren't even divorced yet legally. The judge still has to sign off."

Mateo zipped his briefcase with a sharp, metallic sound. "Legal technicalities are just paperwork, Clara. You gave me what I needed. Everything else is just logistics."

He turned toward the bedroom door, expecting her to follow like she always did—obedient, quiet, and compliant. Instead, Clara knelt down beside the bed on the pretense of retrieving a dropped earring. In one swift, concealed movement, her fingers brushed against the cold metallic casing of the hidden device. It was a miniature digital audio recorder, its storage light flashing to indicate it was actively saving a massive data file.

Mateo paused at the doorway, glancing back over his shoulder. "What are you doing down there? We don't have time for this."

"Just looking for my pearl earring," Clara replied smoothly, sliding the tiny recorder directly into the deep pocket of her wrap dress. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Mateo scoffed, checking his expensive wristwatch. "Leave it. I’ll buy you a new pair. Come on."

Clara stood, hiding the device securely inside her dress pocket. She walked past him toward the hallway, casting one final, lingering look at the empty master bedroom where she had spent years believing in a lie. As they descended the grand staircase, the front door swung open on its own, revealing an unexpected visitor blocking their exit.
