Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Ashes

The afternoon sunlight washed over the concrete steps of the federal courthouse, where a swarm of reporters and camera crews immediately surged forward like a breaking wave. Microphones were thrust into Clara's face, and camera flashes strobed blindingly against her eyes.
"Mrs. Santos! Is it true your husband used shell corporations to hide millions?"
"Did you know about the embezzlement before you signed the divorce papers?"
Clara held up a single hand, her expression calm, resolute, and completely unshakeable. She did not flinch from the cameras. "No comment on ongoing judicial proceedings," she said clearly, her voice steady and authoritative. "My sole focus right now is the health and safety of my unborn child. The judicial system is doing its work, and justice will take its course."
Before the reporters could hurl another barrage of questions, two federal marshals stepped in, forming a protective barrier that escorted Clara down the steps and toward a waiting black town car.
She slid into the cool leather interior of the vehicle, letting out a long, shuddering breath that she had held in since entering the courtroom. The door clicked shut, sealing out the chaotic noise of the outside world.
Elena was already seated in the back, working on a tablet device. Without looking up, the attorney spoke in a subdued tone. "The judge just denied bail. Mateo is being transferred to the federal detention center downtown pending sentencing."
Clara leaned her head back against the headrest, closing her eyes for a brief moment. "And his assets?"
"Completely frozen," Elena replied, finally looking over at her. "The corporate board has already initiated emergency bankruptcy proceedings. Everything Mateo built over the last decade has evaporated into thin air. Ironically, because your personal trust fund was legally separated prior to the corporate expansion, you retain full ownership of the coastal estate and the family holdings."
Clara opened her eyes, looking out the tinted window as the car pulled away from the curb. "I don't want his empire, Elena. I want a clean slate. I want a safe home where my child can grow up far away from greed, corruption, and deceit."
Elena nodded slowly, a rare, genuine smile touching her lips. "You might actually get it, Clara. But there is one final piece of business you need to address before you can truly close this chapter."

Clara turned her head, raising an eyebrow. "What piece of business could possibly remain?"
