Chapter 10 - The Unraveling Defense

"She's lying! Every single word is a vindictive fabrication!" Mateo shouted across the courtroom, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "She orchestrated this entire scheme because she found out about my personal life! She wanted revenge!"
The judge glared down from the bench with stern disapproval. "Mr. Santos, if you interrupt these proceedings one more time, I will revoke your bail permanently and have you removed to a holding cell for the remainder of the trial."
Mateo’s knees weakened slightly, and his defense attorney forcefully pulled him back down into his seat, whispering fierce reprimands.
The prosecutor turned back toward the witness stand, offering Clara a reassuring nod. "Mrs. Santos, the defense suggests your testimony is motivated by personal animosity. How do you respond to the claim that you acted out of spite?"
Clara placed her hands gently over her pregnant belly, her face softening with profound, dignified sorrow. "If I wanted revenge, Mr. Prosecutor, I would have walked away with the millions he tried to stash offshore and let him drown quietly. Instead, I stayed. I signed the divorce papers he shoved in my face yesterday morning without shedding a single tear, because I knew that signing them was the only legal key required to unlock the federal asset freeze."
The courtroom fell into an absolute, pin-drop silence. Even the journalists stopped typing. The realization dawned on everyone present: Clara had played a masterclass in psychological chess, luring Mateo into a false sense of absolute victory just long enough to trap him permanently.
"No further questions, Your Honor," the prosecutor said, stepping back to his table with a triumphant smile.
The judge turned his piercing gaze toward the defense counsel. "Your witness, counselor. Do you wish to cross-examine?"
The defense attorney stood up slowly, looking thoroughly defeated. He glanced back at Mateo, who was now staring blankly at the polished wooden table in front of him, completely broken. "The defense has no questions for the witness, Your Honor."
"Mrs. Santos, you are excused," the judge instructed. "You may step down."

Clara stood up with effortless grace, smoothing her navy blue maternity dress one last time. As she walked down the center aisle toward the exit, she didn't look back at Mateo once. She pushed open the heavy wooden doors and stepped out into the bright, blinding midday sun.
