Chapter 9 - The Micro-SD Revelation

The tiny piece of plastic rested in Marcus's palm like a grain of sand, yet it carried enough explosive data to bring down a multinational financial empire and half the municipal government along with it. Elena lunged across the slick, foam-covered floor with the desperation of a cornered animal, her cuffed hands outstretched to snatch the micro-SD card from his grip.

Marcus reacted on pure instinct. He twisted his body away from her lunge, using his shoulder to drive Elena backward into the sliding glass panel of an empty executive office. The glass cracked with a sharp, echoing snap, spiderwebbing outward under the impact, but it held firm. Elena slid down the shattered frame, gasping for breath as the chemical smoke continued to pour from the vents overhead.

"Marcus! Give it to me!" Elena shrieked, her immaculate professional veneer completely shattered. Her hair was disheveled, her designer suit ruined by the white chemical foam, and her eyes wide with unadulterated terror. "You have no idea what you're holding! That card doesn't just contain financial records—it contains the biometrics of every black-ops shell company funding the syndicate! If you plug that into a standard terminal, an automated counter-protocol will trace your IP address and execute a lethal feedback loop through your nervous system!"

"Shut up, Elena," Marcus snarled, his voice steady despite the burning in his lungs. He carefully slipped the micro-SD card into the inner waterproof pocket of his tactical vest, sealing the zipper tight. He scooped Maya back up into his arms, cradling her against his chest as her breathing grew dangerously shallow. "Your ghost stories don't scare me anymore. We're getting out of here."

The heavy intercom speaker beside the sealed fire doors crackled to life again. The voice of Detective Vance boomed through the corridor with chilling authority.

"Officer Reed, this is your final warning. Drop your sidearm and step away from Miss Vance immediately. We have authorization from the district attorney to use lethal force for the recovery of classified state assets."

"State assets?" Marcus shouted back over the hiss of the suppression vents, his voice dripping with bitter irony. "Since when is embezzlement a state secret?"

"Since the money was allocated from the municipal pension fund to finance the mayor's reelection campaign," a calm, synthesized voice answered through the speaker. It wasn't Detective Vance anymore. It was an automated corporate AI override, broadcasting directly into the hallway. "Lockdown level omega engaged. Oxygen purging in forty seconds."

A digital countdown timer suddenly projected in glowing red numbers across the frosted glass of the fire doors: 00:39... 00:38...

Elena let out a hysterical laugh from the floor, wiping blood from her lip. "You hear that, hero? Thirty-eight seconds until this entire floor becomes a tomb. You can't hack the door, you can't shoot the glass, and you can't carry your dying wife down twenty flights of stairs before your lungs collapse. Hand me the card, Marcus, and I'll punch the manual override code into the terminal right now. It's your only way out."

Marcus stared down at Maya. Her eyes were fluttering shut, her pulse racing beneath his fingertips like a trapped bird beating its wings against a cage. He reached down, unclipped his heavy service radio, and held it up to the intercom speaker.

"I'm not giving you the card, Elena," Marcus said softly, his thumb pressing down on the emergency broadcast channel. "And I'm not using your terminal. I'm using mine."

He keyed a specific, classified seven-digit emergency override code into his radio keypad—the universal federal whistleblower frequency reserved exclusively for active-duty law enforcement officers facing imminent execution by rogue state actors.
