Chapter 1 - The Broken Trust Code

The sharp, metallic tang of dark roast coffee hung heavily in the sterile corridor of Vanguard Financial. Maya sat crumpled against the pale gray drywall, her breath hitching in her throat. Her white top was stained with dark liquid, mirroring the shattered ceramic mug nearby. Her face was pale, tear-streaked, and twisted with physical agony as she cradled her lower abdomen.

Elena Vance stood over her like a monolithic shadow, impeccably dressed in a sharp black business suit. Elena’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure fury. She reached down, her manicured fingers digging viciously into Maya’s thin arm, hauling her slightly upward despite Maya’s gasping protests.

"Give me the trust code!" Elena hissed, her voice vibrating with venomous urgency.

Footsteps echoed sharply down the corridor. Officer Marcus Reed sprinted around the corner, his blue uniform jacket flapping, his badge catching the fluorescent light. He took in the chaotic scene—his sobbing wife on the floor, the aggressive posture of his chief executive.

Marcus rushed forward, throwing his weight against Elena and shoving her backward against the opposite wall.

"Get your hands off my wife!" Marcus shouted, his face dark with protective rage.

Elena stumbled, regaining her composure with chilling speed. She adjusted her lapel, glaring at Marcus with absolute disdain.

"She stole from you!" Elena yelled back, pointing a trembling, accusing finger at Maya.

Maya clutched her pregnant stomach tighter, fresh tears spilling over her lashes as she looked up at her husband.

"She kicked me in the stomach!" Maya cried frantically, her voice cracking. "She told me to say I fell!"

Marcus froze, his breath catching in his throat as the full horror of the accusation settled over him. He looked down at his wife, then across the hall at his superior, whose phone was slowly lighting up with an incoming encrypted call from an unknown number.
