Chapter 2 - The Encryption of Betrayal

The fluorescent lights of the Vanguard Financial corridor seemed to hum with a malicious frequency. Marcus stared down at Maya, his uniform jacket feeling suddenly too tight around his chest. The heavy weight of his service weapon pressed against his hip, a cold reminder of the duty he had sworn to uphold. Yet, right now, his world was entirely fractured between the bleeding woman on the floor and the unyielding corporate tyrant standing ten feet away.
"Marcus, don't believe a word she says," Elena whispered, her voice dropping into a smooth, hypnotic cadence that completely contrasted with her violent actions moments ago. She stepped forward, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished tile. "Your wife has been siphoning high-yield trust funds from the Vanguard vaults for the past six months. I caught her red-handed. The spilt coffee was just a panicked distraction."
"She kicked me, Marcus! Look at me!" Maya sobbed, curling tighter into a protective ball. Fresh blood began to seep through the white fabric of her top, a horrifying crimson stain spreading against the cold floor. "She wanted the master encryption key. The trust code for the offshore accounts. She threatened our baby if I didn't hand it over!"
Marcus looked between them, his mind racing through protocols, evidence, and raw emotion. He reached for his radio, his thumb hovering over the transmission button.
"Operator, send an ambulance and a forensic officer to Vanguard Financial, sector four," Marcus ordered, his voice strained.
Elena didn't flinch at the mention of forensics. Instead, a cold, knowing smile touched the corners of her painted lips. She reached slowly into the tailored pocket of her black business suit, withdrawing a sleek, encrypted corporate tablet. The screen glowed with a single active window displaying a live biometric data feed.
"You can call all the uniforms you want, Officer Reed," Elena said softly, stepping closer to Marcus while casting a predatory glance down at Maya. "But forensic evidence won't save a thief. Especially when the stolen digital asset was just transferred directly from your wife's personal handheld device into an offshore account registered under your own residential address."

Marcus stopped breathing. His hand dropped slowly from his radio as the screen of Elena's tablet flashed his own social security number alongside the unauthorized multi-million dollar transfer.
