Chapter 6 - The Breach at Home

The glowing screen of Marcus's smartphone displayed a nightmare in real-time. Three masked figures in black tactical gear breached his front door with a deafening crash, splintering the oak frame into a thousand pieces. The motion-activated security camera inside his living room showed them sweeping through the hallway with military precision, ransacking bookshelves, and smashing picture frames where he and Maya had smiled on their wedding day.

"No... no, leave them alone!" Maya screamed from the floor, her voice cracking into a raw, agonizing shriek as she tried to crawl toward Marcus's legs. "Our nursery... the baby's room... they're tearing it apart!"

Marcus felt a red haze of fury cloud his vision. Every protective instinct he possessed as a husband, a father, and a law enforcement officer violently collided. He stepped toward Elena, closing the distance between them in a single stride, and shoved her hard against the concrete wall. The impact knocked the wind out of her, but Elena’s chilling smile never wavered.

"Call them off," Marcus snarled, pressing his forearm against her collarbone just enough to restrict her breathing without crushing her windpipe. "Or I swear to God, I will forget my badge right now and throw you off this twentieth-floor balcony."

Elena let out a raspy, defiant laugh, her eyes locking onto his with absolute contempt. "You think those men are working for me, Marcus? You're even more naive than your wife. Vanguard Financial is just a front. We are merely the middle management for an offshore syndicate that owns half the politicians in this city—including your precinct captain."

The younger patrol officer standing nearby dropped his radio in sheer disbelief. "Captain Miller? That's impossible. He's a twenty-year veteran..."

"He's a twenty-year payroll asset," Elena corrected smoothly, tilting her head against the wall. "And right now, your precious captain is walking into your precinct arm-in-arm with federal agents to seize every piece of evidence from your active case files. By sunrise, you won't just be suspended, Officer Reed. You'll be the prime suspect in an international money-laundering conspiracy."

Maya clutched her lower stomach, her face twisted in a mask of pure terror and physical agony. "Marcus... the floor... look at the floor vent behind her..."

Marcus glanced down past Elena’s tailored black heels. Near the base of the drywall, the heavy metal grating of the building's central ventilation shaft was slightly ajar. A faint, sweet chemical smell drifted upward from the dark opening—the unmistakable scent of industrial gas.

Elena’s eyes widened slightly, the first true flicker of genuine panic crossing her features as she realized Maya had noticed the vent.

"Don't look at it," Elena hissed, suddenly struggling against Marcus's grip with surprising strength. "Get away from the wall!"

Before Marcus could react, a heavy, muffled explosion echoed from deep within the building's core, and a thick plume of white smoke began billowing furiously from the ventilation shaft right at their feet.
