Chapter 7 - The Choking Smoke

The thick, acrid smoke billowed from the floor vent with terrifying speed, filling the sterile corridor with a chemical fog that immediately burned the back of Marcus’s throat. He coughed violently, his grip on Elena slipping as the visibility dropped to near zero. The emergency sprinklers overhead clicked loudly, but instead of water, they began hissing a dense, inert suppression foam designed to smother electrical fires—and anyone breathing the air nearby.
"Get low! Stay down!" Marcus shouted, dropping to his knees beside Maya, who was now choking and clutching her abdomen as the toxic white vapor enveloped them.
"The security override... it triggered the clean-agent fire suppression system," Elena coughed, stumbling backward against the opposite wall while pulling a small silk handkerchief over her nose and mouth. Despite the chaos, her eyes remained locked on them like a predator tracking wounded prey. "It removes oxygen from the room within ninety seconds. You can't outrun it, and the doors are magnetically sealed."
Through the dense haze, the heavy glass fire doors at the end of the corridor slammed shut with a definitive, mechanical thud. The green exit signs flickered, buzzed, and then went completely dark, leaving only the dim, pulsing red glow of the emergency battery packs.
"Marcus... I can't breathe," Maya whimpered, her fingers clawing weakly at the floor tiles. The blood and spilled coffee beneath her had mixed into a dark, viscous paste, and her face was turning an alarming shade of gray. "The baby... I think... I think the smoke is..."
"Look at me, Maya! Stay with me!" Marcus yelled over the deafening hiss of the overhead nozzles. He stripped off his blue uniform jacket, pressing the thick fabric over Maya's nose and mouth to filter out the chemical fog.
He looked around frantically for an escape route. The windows were reinforced double-paned ballistic glass designed to withstand a car bomb; they wouldn't shatter even if he emptied his entire service magazine into them. They were trapped in a vertical coffin on the twentieth floor of a corrupt corporate monolith, abandoned by their department and hunted by a syndicate with limitless reach.
A metallic clatter echoed from the ventilation shaft behind Elena. The heavy metal grating had been blown outward from the inside by the pressure differential.
Out of the dark, smoke-filled tunnel emerged a figure wearing a heavy chemical respirator and carrying a waterproof military-grade data case. The figure paused, locked eyes with Elena through the hazy gloom, and tossed a heavy steel crowbar across the slick floor toward her feet.
Elena caught the crowbar effortlessly with one hand, a triumphant sneer returning to her face as she stepped over the chemical foam.
"End of the line, Officer Reed," Elena said, her voice muffled slightly by her handkerchief as she raised the heavy iron bar. "Hand over your service radio, and maybe I'll let the paramedics cart your wife away before the oxygen runs out completely."
May you like
Marcus stood up slowly, positioning his body directly between the advancing executive and his unconscious, bleeding wife. He unclipped his heavy tactical flashlight, flicking it onto its highest blinding strobe setting, and aimed it straight into Elena’s eyes.
