Chapter 8 - The Blinding Light

The high-intensity LED strobe beam cut through the thick white chemical fog like a laser, bouncing off the polished tiles and blinding Elena instantly. She cried out, dropping the heavy crowbar as she raised her cuffed hands to shield her eyes, stumbling backward against the wall.

"You're done, Elena," Marcus shouted, his voice echoing with raw authority over the hissing vents. He closed the distance in two rapid strides, kicking the crowbar away into the darkness and slamming his weight against her, pinning her chest to the drywall. "Give me the override code for the doors right now, or I swear I'll leave you here to choke on your own gas!"

"You... you fool," Elena choked out, squinting fiercely against the blinding light as tears streamed down her cheeks. She clawed at his uniform sleeves, her manicured nails digging into his skin. "You think I have the master code in my head? The board of directors holds the keys. If I don't check in with the terminal downstairs every ten minutes, the entire Vanguard network self-destructs, wiping every financial record, every offshore account, and... every piece of evidence that could prove your wife's innocence!"

Marcus froze, his muscles locking up. He looked down at Maya, who lay completely motionless now, her head resting in a pool of dark liquid, her chest barely rising. The chemical fog was thickening by the second, reducing the air to a suffocating weight that made his lungs burn with every microscopic gasp.

"Maya!" Marcus screamed, abandoning Elena entirely as he dropped to his knees beside his wife. He scooped her lightweight body into his arms, ignoring the searing pain in his own chest. She felt terrifyingly cold.

A sharp, rhythmic tapping sound echoed from the heavy glass fire doors down the hall.

Marcus snapped his head toward the sound through the hazy white fog. A beam of bright, steady light pierced through the frosted glass. A muffled voice shouted through the heavy intercom speaker beside the frame.

"Vanguard Security, open up! This is Detective Vance—drop your weapon and step away from the corporate asset!"

Marcus's heart hammered against his ribs. Detective Vance? Elena's brother, the lead investigator on the city's internal affairs bureau, standing right on the other side of the sealed doors. The entire system was a closed loop of corruption, a family business built on stolen millions and buried bodies.

"Marcus... don't open it," a weak, trembling voice whispered against his chest.

Marcus looked down in astonishment. Maya’s eyes were barely open, her lips trembling as she forced the words past her pale lips. She weakly raised her right hand, pressing a tiny, blood-stained micro-SD card directly into his palm.

"She dropped it... when you shoved her," Maya whispered, a faint, defiant spark flickering in her eyes. "The master ledger... all of it... is on this card."

May you like

Elena, recovering her vision from the strobe light, lunged forward from the wall with a desperate, feral snarl, screaming as she dived directly toward Marcus’s hand.
