Chapter 14 - The Final Leverage

The cold ocean breeze swept through the open bay doors of the warehouse, carrying the sharp scent of salt and oil. Marcus remained frozen on his hands and knees, his fingers mere inches from his fallen service weapon, while Captain Miller’s revolver remained locked dead-center on Maya’s chest.
"You're making a mistake, Miller," Marcus growled, his voice trembling with a mixture of agony and suppressed fury. "Killing us won't bury the ledger. The data on that micro-SD card is already mirrored on an automated server. The moment my heartbeat flatlines, the encryption keys will broadcast to every major news outlet and federal agency in the country."
Captain Miller paused, his finger resting lightly on the trigger. A flicker of genuine doubt crossed his weathered face before he let out a dry, dismissive scoff.
"A clever bluff, Marcus. Just like your father's grand speech before the internal affairs board," Miller said, tilting his head. "Except your father didn't have a pregnant wife and an unborn child dangling over a sixty-foot drop into the harbor. Hand over the micro-SD card, Maya. Or watch your husband take his last breath right here on the concrete."
Maya looked from the barrel of the gun down to Marcus, who was shaking his head frantically, mouthing no. She let out a long, shuddering breath, her fingers tightening around the sealed medical pouch resting on her chest. For a second, the warehouse fell completely silent, save for the rhythmic crashing of the dark waves against the rusted pilings outside.
"Marcus... I love you," Maya whispered softly, a single tear cutting a clean path through the soot on her cheek.
Before Miller could react, Maya didn't hand over the pouch—she ripped the zipper open, pulled the tiny micro-SD card out with her fingernails, and threw it with all her remaining strength straight up into the towering industrial rafters above them, where it vanished instantly into the dark steel girders.
Miller cursed loudly, instinctively tracking the movement, and fired a wild shot that shattered a overhead light bulb in a shower of sparks.
"Get the card! Tear the rafters apart!" Miller screamed at the tactical operatives.

In the sudden chaos, Marcus didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, tackling Miller hard around the waist and sending both of them crashing over the edge of the concrete pier toward the water below.
