Chapter 5 - The Federal Override

The mention of the Department of Homeland Security hung in the sterile air like a shroud of toxic gas. The two patrol officers holding Elena’s arms suddenly loosened their grip, looking toward Marcus with silent, pleading confusion. Federal jurisdiction superseded local police protocol instantly, turning a standard corporate embezzlement call into a classified national security labyrinth.
"Don't listen to her," Maya cried out from the floor, clutching her abdomen as another wave of agonizing contractions racked her slender frame. Her voice was growing weaker, her lips turning a faint, alarming shade of blue. "She's bluffing... she bought those encryption keys on the dark web through a shell company in Panama. Look at her corporate badge... it's a temporary visitor pass!"
Marcus dropped to one knee beside his wife, ignoring protocol to press his palm against her freezing forehead. The cold reality of her declining vital signs hit him harder than any corporate threat. He looked down at her blood-stained white top, realizing that every second they wasted arguing about jurisdiction was another second slipping away from their unborn child.
"Forget the briefcase," Marcus ordered the patrol officers, his voice cracking with emotion. "Get the medical kit from my cruiser right now. Where is that damn ambulance?"
"Dispatch says traffic is completely locked down on the third avenue bridge," the younger officer stammered, pulling his radio closer to his mouth. "They can't get through the blockade."
"What blockade?" Marcus demanded, standing up abruptly.
"Mine," Elena answered smoothly, her handcuffs clicking loosely around her wrists as she casually straightened her black business suit. She didn't look like a detained suspect; she looked like a chess grandmaster watching her opponent walk directly into a checkmate. "When a Vanguard trust code is compromised, automated emergency protocols lock down a three-block radius to prevent the physical extraction of digital assets. No ambulances in. No forensics out. Until I receive the master decryption key from your wife's personal storage locker."
Marcus stared at her, the horrific puzzle pieces clicking into place. Elena hadn't been cornered; she had engineered this entire trap from the very beginning. She had lured Maya to the office after hours, assaulted her to extract the code, and then triggered a city-block lockdown to trap them all inside a corporate cage where local laws didn't exist.
"You're insane," Marcus breathed, his hand tightening around the grip of his unholstered weapon. "You're willing to let my wife and child die just to cover up your financial crimes?"
"I'm a survivor, Officer Reed," Elena replied, stepping past the hesitant patrol officers as if the handcuffs weren't even there. She reached into her blazer pocket with her cuffed hands, pulling out a small, blinking satellite communicator. "And time is up. Look at your phone."

Marcus's personal smartphone buzzed violently in his tactical vest pocket. He pulled it out with trembling fingers. The screen displayed a live video feed of his own front porch, where three armed men in unmarked tactical gear were kicking down his front door.
