Chapter 9 - The Unauthorized Knock

The three sharp knocks echoed through the quiet apartment like gunshots. Elena froze, her hand hovering just inches from Arthur’s toolkit. Toby whimpered softly from the sofa, pulling his knees up to his chest and clutching his comic book like a shield.
Julian Cross moved silently toward the heavy wooden door, gesturing for Marcus and Arthur to stay quiet by the kitchen pantry. Julian pressed his ear against the cold wood, listening intently to the muffled murmurs outside in the narrow hallway.
"This is an illegal lockout," Julian whispered fiercely over his shoulder, his eyes locked on Elena. "There is no active court order for today. That's private security masquerading as bailiffs."
"Open the door, or we will authorize a forced breach!" the voice outside commanded, louder this time, accompanied by the heavy thud of a shoulder hitting the wood.
Elena’s anger finally overrode her fear. She stepped away from the kitchen counter, marched across the living room, and grabbed the heavy deadbolt. Before Julian could stop her, she flung the door wide open.
Standing in the dim hallway were two towering men in sharp black suits, wearing identical dark sunglasses despite the indoor lighting. Behind them stood Beatrice Sterling, her golden blouse slightly damp with sweat, a triumphant, manicured smile plastered across her face.
"You can't hide in here forever, Elena," Beatrice sneered, stepping aggressively toward the threshold. She motioned to the two suited men. "Clear the apartment. Throw all their trash out onto the sidewalk."
The larger of the two security guards stepped forward, reaching out a massive hand to push Elena aside.
Before his fingers could even graze her beige shirt, Julian Cross stepped into the doorway, flashing his municipal badge directly into the guard's face. "Step back, mister," Julian commanded, his voice cold and commanding. "Touch this tenant, and I’ll personally have your security license revoked before the hour is out. You are standing in the middle of an active federal property audit."
The guard hesitated, his massive arm freezing mid-air. He looked back at Beatrice for instructions.
Beatrice’s triumphant smile faltered, replaced by a flicker of panic. "Don't listen to him! He's just a low-level bureaucrat! Get them out of my building!"
"Your building, Mrs. Sterling?" Marcus’s raspy voice cut through the doorway as he stepped out from the kitchen, holding the glowing borescope monitor high in his hand. He tilted the screen so the harsh blue light illuminated Beatrice’s horrified face. "Take a good look at this screen, Beatrice. This is the interior of the north load-bearing column. Your corporate buddies are drilling into the foundation right now down in the basement, aren't they?"
Beatrice’s jaw dropped. She tried to step backward, but the two suited guards blocked her path.

"If that column collapses," Marcus continued, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper, "the entire west wing—including your precious penthouse office on the sixth floor—goes down with it. Now, do you want to call off your goons, or do we let the fire department handle the structural emergency?"
