Chapter 8 - Descent into the Sub-Level

The heavy metal door of Unit 4B swung open with a sharp click, revealing a room bathed in the dusty golden glow of late afternoon sunlight filtering through unwashed windows. Elena stepped across the threshold, her boots clicking softly against the hardwood floor. Toby clutched his small cardboard box of books, his wide eyes scanning the familiar living room that suddenly felt entirely foreign and dangerous.
Arthur strode in immediately behind them, carrying his heavy toolbox and the digital borescope. Julian Cross and Marcus followed closely, securing the deadbolt behind them with a heavy, echoing thunk.
"We don't have much time," Marcus said, tossing his dark cap onto the sofa. He walked straight toward the narrow kitchenette in the corner of the room, stopping directly in front of the floral wallpapered pantry where Beatrice’s hidden package had allegedly been placed earlier.
Elena set Toby down on the sofa, gently patting his shoulder. "Stay right here, buddy. Look at your books for a minute, okay?"
Toby nodded solemnly, pulling out a colorful comic book from his box.
Elena walked over to the kitchen, joining Arthur and Marcus by the pantry. Julian stood by the front window, keeping a watchful eye on the street below where a sleek black sedan had just pulled up to the curb.
"That's her lawyer's car," Julian muttered, his hand resting instinctively inside his tweed jacket. "They aren't going to wait for the housing board's inspection. They're going to try a forced lockout within the hour."
"Let them try," Arthur replied without looking up, his fingers deftly assembling the digital borescope. He fed the long, flexible fiber-optic cable through a tiny pinhole in the floral wallpaper near the baseboard. "Marcus, hold the monitor steady. The main conduit should be right behind this drywall panel."
Marcus stepped up, gripping the handheld display screen as the tiny camera crept through the dark cavity of the wall. The screen flickered to life, casting an eerie blue light across their faces. The image showed a hollow wooden cavity filled with thick insulation, but embedded deep within the wooden studs was a heavy steel lockbox painted industrial gray.
"There it is," Marcus breathed out, a triumphant smile crossing his scarred face. "David’s master vault. Exactly where he left it twenty-eight years ago."
Elena stared at the glowing screen, her heart hammering against her ribs. "How do we open it without triggering the building's main security alarm?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly. "If Beatrice wired the drywall to the security system..."
"She didn't wire it to the security system," a cold, smooth voice echoed from the hallway outside the apartment door.
Everyone froze.
The voice didn't belong to Beatrice Sterling. It was deeper, colder, and dripping with corporate menace.
Three sharp knocks rattled the heavy wooden door of Unit 4B.

"Open up, Mrs. Vance," a strange man called out from the hallway. "This is United Property Management. Your lease has officially been revoked, and we have a court order for immediate repossession of the premises."
