Chapter 10 - The Basement Tremor

The heavy silence that followed Marcus’s warning was abruptly shattered by a low, vibrating rumble that shook the floorboards beneath their feet. A fine layer of old plaster dust sifted down from the ceiling of Unit 4B, dusting Elena’s shoulders and settling softly onto Toby’s cardboard box of books.
Toby gasped, dropping his comic book. "Mommy, what was that?" he cried out, scrambling off the sofa and running straight into Elena’s legs.
Elena scooped her son up into her arms, pressing his face into her shoulder to shield him from the chaos. "It's okay, buddy. Mommy's here," she whispered, though her own heart was racing wildly against her ribs.
Julian Cross grabbed the larger security guard by the lapel of his black suit, shoving him backward into the hallway. "Get out of the way!" Julian yelled, dropping all professional pretense. "They're cutting the primary support beams right now!"
Beatrice Sterling stumbled back against the corridor wall, her face completely drained of color. The confident, arrogant landlord was entirely gone, replaced by a panicked woman realizing the monster she had unleashed was completely out of her control. "I didn't tell them to cut the main pillar," she stammered, her voice shaking violently. "They... they said they were just reinforcing it for the luxury conversion."
"You signed the demolition rider forty-eight hours ago, Beatrice," Arthur said, walking calmly out of the kitchen with his heavy toolbox in one hand and the leather journal tucked under his arm. He stepped past the frozen security guards, eyeing Beatrice with profound disgust. "Greed makes people blind. Now everyone pays the price."
Marcus tossed the glowing borescope monitor onto the sofa and reached into his jacket, pulling out a heavy set of master maintenance keys. "The freight elevator is locked out, but the service stairs at the end of the hall lead directly down to the sub-level foundation room," Marcus instructed, looking at Julian and Elena. "We need to get to that lockbox before the vibration causes a total structural failure."
"Go!" Julian urged Elena, holding the doorway open against the retreating security guards. "I'll stay here and keep these thugs from following you."
Elena didn't hesitate. Clutching Toby tightly to her chest with one arm, she grabbed the orange envelope from the coffee table with her free hand and followed Arthur and Marcus down the narrow, dimly lit hallway toward the metal service stairwell.
The air grew noticeably cooler and damp as they descended the concrete steps. With every floor they went down, the rhythmic, metallic thump-thump-thump of heavy industrial drills vibrating through the building grew louder and more violent.
They reached the heavy steel fire door marked SUB-LEVEL 1 - AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY. Marcus jammed a master key into the heavy deadbolt, turning it with a loud metallic click. He pushed the door open, stepping into the massive, shadows-filled basement—only to freeze dead in his tracks.
Standing in the center of the damp room, directly in front of the exposed concrete foundation wall, were two men in hard hats operating a roaring industrial diamond-tipped core drill, its cutting edge glowing white-hot as it bored directly into the primary steel-reinforced pillar.

And strapped to the pillar, right next to the roaring drill, was the grey steel lockbox David Vance had hidden twenty-eight years ago.
