Chapter 14 - The Final Inscription

The harsh light of the federal marshal’s tactical flashlight illuminated the damp concrete pillar where the lockbox had rested for nearly thirty years. As Elena turned to guide Toby toward the stairs, the beam caught a series of deep, freshly chiseled numbers carved into the rough stone just below the anchor bolts.

It wasn't part of David Vance’s original 1995 engineering marks. The edges of the concrete were clean, gray, and starkly modern.

Elena stopped in her tracks, her hand instinctively tightening around Toby’s small palm. "Arthur, look at this," she whispered, pointing down at the base of the pillar.

Arthur stepped closer, holding his weathered multi-tool like a makeshift pointer. He knelt down, squinting in the harsh light. The chiseled numbers read: 08-14-2023 - PHASE TWO LOCKED.

Julian Cross rushed over, his brow furrowing deeply as he read the inscription. "That date... that's today," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave with sudden realization. "Phase Two? What does that mean?"

Marcus pushed past the federal agents, dropping to one knee beside Arthur. He ran a scarred finger over the freshly carved digits. "This wasn't carved by David," Marcus said grimly. "David's marks were stamped in iron plate. This... this was carved within the last twelve hours."

Before anyone could process the chilling implication, the overhead lights in the basement flickered violently and died, plunging the sub-level into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

Toby let out a startled gasp, burying his face in Elena’s beige shirt. "Mommy, it's dark!" he cried out.
