Chapter 7 - The Interrupted Descent

The dark-suited maintenance worker paused in the doorway, the harsh fluorescent light glinting off the metal zipper of his jumpsuit. In his gloved hand, the worn leather-bound journal looked unmistakably like the one David Vance used to carry everywhere. Elena’s breath caught in her throat. She recognized the frayed spine and the ink-stained leather instantly.

"Where did you get that?" Elena demanded, stepping forward before Julian or Arthur could react. Her voice echoed sharply off the tile walls, carrying a desperate edge.

The man in the jumpsuit didn't answer immediately. He slowly raised his head, revealing a face shadowed by the bill of a dark baseball cap. A thin, jagged scar cut across his left cheek, catching the light as he offered a tight, unsettling smile.

"Mrs. Vance," the man said, his voice deep and raspy. "Your husband was a very careful man. He knew someone would come looking for his work eventually. He just didn't expect it to take this long."

Beatrice Sterling let out a sharp, hysterical laugh from across the room. "Look at that! The rats are turning on each other! Marcus, you fool, hand that book over right now!"

The man—Marcus—ignored Beatrice entirely. He tossed the leather journal across the room. It arced gracefully through the air before landing squarely on the laminate counter, right on top of the stamped "PAID" paperwork. Arthur reached out and caught it, his weathered fingers instantly tracing the embossed initials D.V. on the cover.

"How do you know my husband?" Elena asked, her eyes burning as she clutched Toby tighter against her hip.

"I was his assistant on the 1995 foundation overhaul," Marcus replied, stepping fully out of the dim hallway into the bright office. He pulled off his dark gloves and tossed them onto a nearby chair. "David didn't just build the foundation of this apartment complex; he built a fail-safe. When Beatrice’s corporate partners bought out the original investors, they thought they bought everything. They missed one crucial clause in the original deed."

Julian Cross stepped in front of Elena, his eyes narrowing as he studied Marcus. "The reversion clause," Julian stated, realization dawning across his face. "If the building is proven to be structurally altered without the primary engineer's structural consent, ownership legally reverts to the municipal housing trust and the residing tenants."

"Bingo," Marcus said, nodding slowly. "And Unit 4B holds the master physical seal that proves the structural load-bearing walls were deliberately weakened last month to fake a condemnation order."

Officer Miller uncrossed his arms, his expression turning grave. "Wait a minute. You're telling me this whole building is structurally compromised?"

"Not yet," Marcus corrected sharply. "Not yet. But if Mrs. Sterling's contractors drill into the north load-bearing pillar by midnight tonight, the entire west wing will be flagged as an immediate public hazard, forcing an emergency demolition before anyone can audit the deed."

Elena felt the room spin. Demolition. If the building was demolished, she and Toby would be cast out onto the street with nothing, stripped of their home, their history, and their safety.

Beatrice lunged toward the counter, her face purple with rage. "You're lying! You're all lying to steal my property!" she screamed, her fingernails clawing at the air.

Before Beatrice could reach the journal, Arthur whipped open the toolbox, pulled out a heavy steel pry bar, and slammed it onto the counter with a deafening crash.

"Enough games," Arthur growled, his voice carrying an authority that silenced everyone in the room. He looked directly at Elena. "Mrs. Vance, take your son and your box. We are going down to Unit 4B right now, and we are opening that wall before they destroy the truth."
