Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Walls

The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to flicker and dim as Julian’s words settled over the room. Little Toby pressed his face into Elena’s beige shirt, suddenly overwhelmed by the intense, hostile energy radiating from the adults. Elena wrapped her free arm around her son, her mind racing to connect the pieces of a puzzle she never knew she was part of.

"My husband?" Elena whispered, her voice cracking. "David was a standard building maintenance tech. He never mentioned hidden blueprints or structural foundations from 1995."

"David Vance was a genius structural engineer who walked away from corporate high-rises to raise his family in peace," Julian corrected gently, tapping the leather briefcase. "He knew what Beatrice and her associates were planning decades before they even bought the deed. That’s why he secured the master stabilization covenants inside the structural columns of your unit."

Beatrice Sterling pushed herself off the filing cabinet, her golden silk blouse slightly rumpled from her panic. Her eyes burned with a desperate, venomous hatred. "You're building a fantasy on the delusions of a dead man!" she shrieked, her voice echoing sharply. "There is nothing inside those walls except old concrete and asbestos! Officer, arrest this man for impersonating a federal official!"

Officer Miller didn't move an inch. He simply crossed his arms over his chest and looked at Beatrice with absolute indifference. "Shut up, Beatrice," the officer said coldly. "You've made enough phone calls today."

Arthur slid off his high stool behind the counter, moving with surprising agility for a middle-aged man. He reached beneath the desk and retrieved a heavy metal toolbox, setting it down with a loud clank right next to the municipal papers.

"If we're going to find what David hid, we need to move before the afternoon shift changes," Arthur said, unlocking the toolbox with a small brass key. He pulled out a specialized thermal scanner and a compact digital borescope—a long, flexible tube equipped with a high-definition micro-camera at the tip.

Elena looked down at the tools, then at the orange envelope in her hand, and finally at Julian Cross. The fear that had paralyzed her just moments ago was rapidly morphing into a cold, fierce determination. She had spent years struggling to pay rent in a building where the landlord actively plotted her destruction. If there was a way to secure her home and her son’s future permanently, she was going to take it.

"Let's go," Elena said firmly, adjusting Toby’s box of books in her arms.

Julian nodded approvingly, turning toward the glass exit doors. But as Arthur lifted the toolbox to follow them, the heavy security door at the back of the office—the one leading directly into the subterranean maintenance tunnels—slowly swung open with a long, agonizing squeak.

A tall man in a dark maintenance jumpsuit stepped out of the shadows, holding a familiar leather-bound journal in his gloved hand.
