Chapter 9: Behind Bars

Clara was transferred to the county detention center, charged with grand kidnapping, child endangerment, and extortion. The Ashefords’ legal team spared no expense in painting her as a manipulative domestic servant who had abducted a vulnerable, wealthy heir for ransom.

The national media picked up the story. Headline news aired images of Clara in an orange jumpsuit alongside glamorous pictures of Richard and Victoria holding a press conference, shedding fake tears for their ""returned boy.""

Sitting in her cold cell, Clara felt utterly defeated. She didn't care about the legal charges or the prison sentence facing her. All she could think about was Toby, trapped once again in that emotionless world of luxury and neglect.

A week into her detention, a middle-aged woman in a sharp grey suit visited the jail. She sat across from Clara in the visitation room, opening a thick leather briefcase.

""My name is Eleanor Vance,"" the woman said calmly. ""I am a senior pro-bono defense attorney with the Child Advocacy Network.""

Clara looked up, her eyes hollow. ""Did they send you to help me?""

""I came because I received a letter,"" Eleanor said, pulling out a piece of paper covered in child’s handwriting and colorful crayon drawings. ""A young boy managed to slip this into the mailbox at his private school. It was addressed to the Legal Aid Society.""

Clara recognized Toby’s drawing immediately—a picture of a small cabin under pine trees, with two figures holding hands.

Eleanor read the short note aloud: “Please help Clara. She didn’t steal me. She saved me from the fire when my parents forgot me. I walk because of her. She is my real mom.”

Clara buried her face in her hands, weeping silently.

""I’ve looked into the Asheford estate documents, Clara,"" Eleanor said, her voice turning sharp and resolute. ""There is a massive paper trail regarding a trust fund transfer to an institution just weeks after the fire. We are going to fight this.""
