Chapter 11: The Truth Speaks

Toby sat on the witness stand, his small legs barely reaching the bottom of the chair. The judge leaned forward, his expression softening.
""Son, do you understand what it means to tell the truth?"" the judge asked gently.
""Yes, Your Honor,"" Toby replied, his voice firm and clear. ""It means telling what really happened, even if people are scary.""
Eleanor walked over to the boy. ""Toby, can you tell the court about the night of the fire?""
Toby looked across the room. His eyes passed over Richard and Victoria, who sat nervously at the prosecution table, and landed on Clara, who sat at the defense table wearing a plain beige jumpsuit. Clara gave him a soft, encouraging smile.
""The night of the house caught fire, I was upstairs in my room,"" Toby spoke into the microphone. ""I was crying because the smoke was hot. My mom and dad ran outside first. They didn't come back for me.""
Gasps echoed through the public gallery. Richard slammed his hand on the table, but his lawyer quickly pulled him down.
""Who came for you, Toby?"" Eleanor asked quietly.
""Clara,"" Toby said, his eyes glowing with love. ""She ran into the fire. She carried me down three flights of stairs. She got burned on her arm saving me.""

Toby pointed a small finger toward Clara. ""And when we lived in the mountains, she worked all day and helped me walk every night. She gave me a real home. My parents wanted to send me away so they could have money. Clara stayed because she loves me.""
The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the soft ticking of the wall clock. Members of the jury were visibly moved, some wiping away tears.
