Chapter 6: Small Steps

Life in Pine Ridge was peaceful, but Toby’s physical condition remained a challenge. His legs were weak from months of disuse and trauma, but Clara refused to accept that he would never walk again.

Every evening after her shift at the diner, Clara spent hours working with Toby. Guided by old physical therapy books she checked out from the town library, she gently massaged his legs, helping him stretch his tight muscles.

""It hurts a little, Clara,"" Toby whimpered one night as she helped him attempt to stand while holding onto the kitchen table.

""I know, baby,"" Clara said gently, her eyes full of empathy. ""Growth always hurts a little bit. But you are stronger than you think. Try to hold on for five seconds. Just five.""

Toby gritted his teeth, his small hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the wooden table. One second. Two seconds. Three seconds. His legs shook violently, but he held on until Clara caught him softly, pulling him into a warm embrace.

""You did it! Five seconds!"" Clara cheered, kissing his head.

Toby beamed with pride. ""Tomorrow, I'll do six!""

As the months turned into a year, those small seconds accumulated into remarkable progress. Toby moved from his wheelchair to wooden crutches. His spirit blossomed alongside his physical strength. He learned how to plant vegetables in Mrs. Gable’s garden and spent hours drawing pictures of Clara, the cabin, and the tall pine trees.

He didn't ask about his old life anymore. The memory of the grand mansion and the cold parents had faded into a bad dream, replaced by the warm smell of Clara’s homecooked meals and the quiet safety of their mountain home.
